From Oral Herpes to Genital Herpes…and Back to Oral

  • You can actually spread oral herpes to someone’s genitals (and genital herpes to someone’s mouth) during oral sex.

  • In fact, 50% of all new genital herpes infections come from oral herpes.

  • People with oral and genital herpes are most contagious during an outbreak when they have sores.  But, you can still spread the virus even when sores are gone.

  • To reduce risk of transmission of oral or genital herpes during oral sex, use a condom/dental dam.
